Morocco, Hungary Sign MoU on Scientific Research in Forest Sector

Rabat – The high Commission for Waters, Forests, and the Fight against Desertification (HCEFLCD) and the embassy of Hungary in Morocco signed, Friday in Rabat, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on scientific research in the forest sector.

Signed by high commissioner for Waters and Forests, Abdeladim Lhafi and Hungarian ambassador in Rabat, Miklos Eric Tromler, the MoU is meant to strengthen the resilience of forest ecosystems and reduce their vulnerability to climate change.

This is a partnership agreement that defines the action plan for the implementation of the scientific and technical strategies contained in the framework agreement signed between the two parties last April.

This initiative, which aligns with the HCEFLCD strategy on climate change mitigation and adaptation, also builds on the Marrakech proclamation for climate action and sustainable development, adopted during COP 22, particularly with regard to the promotion of scientific research and inter-institutional networking in connection with the improvement of adaptation capacities.

This Memorandum of Understanding also aims to establish an applied research platform for conducting scientific tests related to the modernization of techniques for restoring indigenous forest ecosystems, particularly through the use of innovative water-saving technology.

It is also meant to consolidate Morocco’s commitment to combating climate change and strengthen the role of forest research as a driving force in reconciling economic development and ecological balance.
