HRH Princess Lalla Hasnaa Chairs Awarding Ceremony of ‘Sustainable Coast Trophies’

Skhirat – HRH Princess Lalla Hasnaa, chairwoman of the Mohammed VI Foundation for Environment Protection, chaired, on Monday in Skhirat, the awarding ceremony of the “Lalla Hasnaa Sustainable Coast Trophies” in its second edition (2016).

During this ceremony, HRH Princess Lalla Hasnaa awarded the Trophies to the winners of this second edition, which recognizes outstanding initiatives or projects contributing to the protection of the coastline and encouraging socially and environmentally responsible behavior.

These trophiesn held every two years and open to natural persons (students, middle school students, high school students and citizens, etc.) and public or private legal entities (economic operators, local authorities, NGOs, educational institutions and research centers, etc.), are meant to create a momentum for the protection of the national coastline, enhance and publicize original projects and encourage society to become involved in the protection of the littoral.

They rely on the personal commitment of HRH Princess Lalla Hasnaa as Coast Ambassador, a title awarded to Her Royal Highness by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP).

The “Lalla Hasnaa Sustainable Coast Trophies” proposes five categories: “Clean Beach Program” trophy, “Sharing and Life Conditions” trophy, “Protection and Valorization of Natural Heritage” trophy, “Education and Youth” trophy and “Social and Environmental responsibility of organizations” trophy.

The “Clean Beach Program” trophy, which rewards a beach initiative in terms of management, development, preservation, education and information, went to the Royal Surf Club for its project sensitization and involvement of local residents in cleaning the beaches of Taghazout, Aimuran, the National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water for the project of strengthening structures and activities of awareness and animation on the Bouznika Beach, Les Ciments du Maroc for the environmental awareness project “Lawlabyat Assafi 2016” and the Saidia Development Company for its project to fight the silting up of parking areas in the resort’s beach and basins of the tourism resort of Saidia using soft techniques and natural materials.

This trophy was also awarded to APM Terminals Tangier for the clean beach project, Summer in Oued Alian in the comune of Ksar Sghir.

The trophy “Sharing and Living Environment”, which rewards initiatives enhancing public and natural, urban or peri-urban areas on the Moroccan coast, went to the commune of Tnine Aglou for its rehabilitation and development project of the beach of Sidi Moussa of Aglou following the floods of November 2014.

This trophy was also awarded to the El Jabal associations for culture and supervision of the commune of Mdieq, Almarja for development and cooperation of the municipality of Fnideq and for the youth of the Chabar district in the municipality of Martil for the embellishing actions they have carried out in their neighborhoods.

The trophy “Protection and valorization of the natural heritage”, which honors the most interesting achievements for a better knowledge of the coastline, the conservation of its biodiversity and its fragile ecosystems, went to the Moroccan Association of Orientation and Scientific Research (AMORS) and the Faculty of Science of the Ibn Zohr University of Agadir for their project to involve the population in the preservation and enhancement of the Greater Agadir coastline.

The “Education and Youth” trophies, rewarding the best environmental education projects and studies by schools, high schools, universities or research centers, were awarded to the Mohammed I University in Oujda for its project on the Integrated Management for the Coastal Protection of Moulouya / Saidia, the Sherifian Office of Phosphates (OCP) and the Association of Science Teachers (Safi section) for their project on raising awareness and educating young people about climate change.

They were also awarded to Planète Citoyenne for the project entitled “The Children’s Archipelago of the Sea Forum”, the El Hawzia school group, the Kifah association for sustainable environment and the Higher Institute of Higher Studies in Sustainable Development for their “Goutte d’Or” competition.

As for the trophy “Social and environmental responsibility of organizations”, it was won by the network of Khnifiss associations for their project on ecological tourism in the lagoon of the Khnifiss National Park.

Upon her arrival at the site, HRH Princess Lalla Hasnaa was welcomed by Environment Minister Hakima El Haite, Wali of the Rabat-Salé-Kenitra region and governor of the Rabat prefecture, Abdelouafi Laftite, President of the Rabat-Salé-Kénitra region, Abdessamad Sekkal, and Governor of the prefecture of Skhirat-Temara, Youness Kacimi
