Morocco Official Sponsor of ‘International Year of Sustainable Tourism 2017’

Rabat, 21/03/2017 (MAP) – Morocco will be the official sponsor of the UN World Tourism Organization (WTO) for activities slated to celebrate the International Year of Sustainable Tourism 2017 (IY2017), by putting sustainable and responsible tourism at the heart of its tourism strategy.

The goal of this event, which is in line with the sustainable development program by 2030, is to raise the awareness of public decision-makers in order to make tourism a catalyst for positive change, said a document by the tourism ministry.

Morocco also proposes a program for the IY2017 celebrations at the African level, including a caravan aimed at promoting the African charter of sustainable tourism as well as the best practices of sustainable tourism in Africa.

Inked by Morocco and the WTO on the sidelines of the COP22, this charter is a reference for the development of sustainable tourism in Africa by adhering to a dynamic that brings together economic and social development, preserves the environment and respects the cultural diversity of every country.

The IY2017 features 12 months of global actions aimed at advancing sustainable tourism contribution to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
