Wind Energy: ONEE, MASEN, Nareva/Enel Green Power Sign Contracts for Boujdour Wind Farm Project

Rabat – The National Office of electricity and drinking water (ONEE), the Moroccan agency for Sustainable Energy “MASEN”, and the private developer of the 850 MW Integrated Wind Energy Project, consisting of the Nareva Holding (Morocco) and Enel Green Power (Italy) consortium signed, on Tuesday in Rabat, the contracts for the 300MW Boujdour wind farm.

With an installed capacity of 300 MW, this wind farm located about 7 km northeast of the city of Boujdour (Boujdour Province), will be achieved with an investment of 4 billion dirhams, said Wednesday a joint statement by the ONEE and MASEN.

Second farm of the 850 MW Integrated Wind Energy Project, its gradual commissioning is planned as of 2021, the same source added.

The 850 MW Integrated Wind Energy Project, composed of the five wind farms “Midelt – 180 MW”, “Boujdour – 300 MW”, “Jbel Lahdid in Essaouira – 200 MW”, “Tiskrad- in Tarfaya – 100 MW”, “Tangier II – 70 MW”, is an important component of the national energy strategy, whose objective is to reach 52% of the installed electricity capacity based on renewable energy by 2030, recalled the statement.

Developed as part of private electricity production, it is the “Nareva Holding – Enel Green Power” consortium, associated with “Siemens Gamesa Renewables”, which won the international call for tenders in 2016 for the development, design, financing, construction and operation and maintenance of the 850 MW Integrated Wind Energy Project, the statement noted.

This structuring project, the same source added, has also allowed the emergence of a Moroccan wind industry, in particular through the establishment in Tangier by Siemens Gamesa Renewables of a turbine blade production plant with an annual capacity of about 600 units (equivalent to more than 600 MW/year).

The overall projected electricity production of the 850 MW Integrated Wind Energy Project will save approximately 2,380,000 tons CO2/year, which would be equivalent to the consumption of a city the size of Casablanca, the statement concluded.

The contracts were signed by Abderrahim El Hafidi, ONEE director general, Mustapha Bakkoury, MASEN CEO and by the project company “Boujdour Wind Farm”.
