Morocco’s Laayoune Wins ATO Award of Urban Greening

Doha – Moroccan Southern town Laayoune won, on Monday in Doha, the third award of the Arab Towns Organization (ATO) in “urban greening” category.

The first prize went to Jubail Industrial City (Saudi Arabia), followed by Qatari town Al Shamal.

Founded in the city of Kuwait in 1976, ATO is non-governmental regional organization specializing in the affairs of towns and municipalities.

It aims to preserve the identity of the Arab city, reinforce the Arab local authorities and encourage decentralization by raising the level of municipal services and utilities in Arab towns.

ATO fosters cooperation and exchange of expertise between Arab cities by the adoption of a comprehensive plan to guide the activities and services a city needs on the basis of their economic, social, cultural and environmental.
