Morocco Chairs Scientific and Technical Advisory Body of UNESCO Underwater Convention

Paris, 01/06/2017 (MAP) – Following its election two days ago to the Scientific and Technical Advisory Body of UNESCO 2001 Convention on the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage, Morocco has assumed the chairmanship of the same body.

In a statement to MAP, Morocco’s Ambassador to UNESCO Zohour Alaoui, said that, ahead of the Ocean Conference scheduled in New York next week, this event is doubly important “given that our country was not only elected to this prestigious council but also became its president.”

It is also a recognition of the UNESCO and the international community for the royal vision to build an inclusive, coherent, and voluntary strategy to protect the environment.

The Scientific and Technical Advisory Body is a 12 experts body that provides advice to the Meeting of States Parties in technical matters related to the implementation of the 2001 Convention.

It evaluates the observance of the Rules of the Annex of the Convention in all activities directed at the underwater cultural heritage.
