Morocco’s presidency of COP22 brought adaptation to climate change to forefront of international stage

Benguerir 06/10/2017 (MAP) – Morocco’s presidency of the 22nd UN Conference on Climate Change (COP22) brought the issue of adaptation to climate change to the forefront of the international stage, COP 22 President, Salaheddine Mezouar, said Friday in Benguerir.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 2nd International Conference on Adaptation to Climate Change, held under the theme “Adaptation measures for water and agriculture”, Mezouar noted that developing countries and the most vulnerable countries will always remember that Morocco has brought the issue of climate change adaptation to the forefront of the COP22.

“In the fight against climate change, the international community is on the right track,” he pointed out at this meeting held on October 6-7 at Mohammed VI Polytechnic University.

For his part, the Secretary General of the State Secretariat for Sustainable Development, Mohamed Benyahia, noted that Northern countries consider adaptation to climate change as a local and national issue.

But since the Paris Agreement, he pointed out, developing countries, especially in Africa, have made it a vital and global issue.

Organized by the COP22 scientific committee, the conference brought together several national and international experts, international organizations and think tanks, development banks, as well as researchers and representatives of the civil society.
