COP22 Has ‘Started Well’, in ‘Extremely Positive’ Spirit (Conference Presidency)

Marrakech, 08/11/2016 (MAP) – The 22nd Conference of Parties (COP22) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) has “started well” and the spirit of delegates and negotiators is “extremely positive,” said Tuesday in Marrakech the president of this global event, Salaheddine Mezouar.

“Everybody insists on the effectiveness and urgency to act and work to make this COP an event of action,” said Mezouar at the daily press briefing to present the agenda and the progress of negotiations to achieve the objectives of this Conference, which is being held on November 7-18 in Marrakech.

After the enforcement of the Paris Agreement, all parties are motivated by a “good will” to push forward the negotiations on the mechanisms of implementing and funding the said Agreement, he noted, adding that participants have showed “serenity and great commitment” since the beginning of this international event .

The presidency of the COP22 ensures that this Conference takes place in the best conditions, negotiations are moving forward and effectiveness is achieved, he said.

He also highlighted the “significant” participation of African countries during this event, adding that the “priority” of the Marrakech Conference is to address the concerns of countries threatened by climate change and to bring concrete answers to these concerns.
