ONEE, GSEP and UM6P Join Forces to Promote Academic Excellence in Sustainable Energy Development

Benguerir – The National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE), the Global Sustainable Electricity Partnership (GSEP) and the Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P) have concluded a partnership agreement to grant an educational scholarship to promote academic excellence in the field of sustainable energy development.

It was during a ceremony held at the campus of UM6P in Benguerir that the agreement was signed by Abderrahim El Hafidi, in his capacity as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Global Sustainable Electricity Partnership (GSEP) and Director General of ONEE and Hicham El Habti, President of UM6P, says UM6P in a press release.

Under this agreement, which is part of the program established by the DG of ONEE for his term as President of GSEP for the year 2021-2022 under the theme “Act now to bring the social, environmental and economic benefits of electrification in the world and Africa”, a scholarship will be awarded to two students of UM6P.

Part of GSEP’s annual fellowship program that has supported 144 students from 37 countries since 2001, these fellowships aim to promote the emergence of a new generation of expertise in the fields of sustainable energy development, the release adds.

More specifically, these scholarships will be open to UM6P students enrolled in a Master’s degree program in one of the three energy-related fields: the Master’s degree in Materials Science and Engineering (Material Sciences & Nano-Engineering Department), the Master’s degree in Green Building Engineering and Energy Efficiency of the SAP+D (School of Architecture Planning & Design of UM6P) and the Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering for Renewable Energy and Smart Grids of the UM6P’s Green Tech Institute.

Aware of the importance of developing skills to help support the ambitions of Morocco, the first African country to chair the GSEP and aspiring to become a true regional and international leader in the energy transition, the collaboration with UM6P will give bright students the opportunity to develop their skills by benefiting from a training of excellence, with curricula oriented towards the future, open to the continent, and providing students with an entire ecosystem based on innovation and experimentation.

An association in line with the ambitions of ONEE, which during its mandate at the head of the GSEP, aims to promote the exchange of thoughts and strategic information impacting on the profound transformations expected in the electrical energy sector, including aspects related to decarbonization, digitalization, decentralization and deregulation.

As a reminder, GSEP is a prestigious global alliance at the heart of the electrification revolution and energy transition, bringing together the largest operators in the fields of electricity generation, transmission and distribution, such as EDF-France, ENEL-Italy, AEP-USA, SGCC-China, CHNG-China, Hydro-Quebec-Canada, EuroSibEnergo-Russia and RusHydro – Russia.
