Morocco Attaches Great Importance to Strengthening Int’l Cooperation in Renewable Energy – Minister

Rabat- Morocco attaches great importance to strengthening international cooperation in the field of renewable energy, said Thursday the Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, Leila Benali.

The Kingdom has established strategic cooperation relations with many countries, organizations and international bodies to attract investment and transfer technology, especially in the field of energy, Benali said, speaking at the second meeting of the 26th Extraordinary Session of the Forum of Presidents of the Legislative Powers of Central America, the Caribbean Basin and Mexico (FOPREL).

Morocco, under the High Royal Directions, has adopted since 2009 a national energy strategy based primarily on renewable energy development, energy efficiency, regional integration and environmental protection, she stated.

In that regard, Benali pointed out that 52 renewable energy projects have been completed, with a total capacity of over 4 gigawatts, with 2,261 megawatts achieved between 2009 and 2021 through a funding envelope of approximately 53.1 billion dirhams ($ 5.4 billion).

Besides, about 59 projects are under development or implementation with a total capacity of over 4.5 gigawatts and a 52 billion dirhams ($ 5.5 billion) investment, she said.

The Minister also highlighted the geographical location of Morocco, enabling the country to play an “active role” in the integration of regional energy markets,” adding that the Kingdom is working, in coordination with its partners, on a third power line project with Spain and the first electricity interconnection project with Portugal.

Morocco is also working on the implementation of the joint statement on the sustainable exchange of electricity, which aims to develop and establish a roadmap for the sustainable exchange of electricity between Morocco and Europe (France, Spain, Portugal, and Germany), Benali stated.

In accordance with the Royal Vision for South-South cooperation, Morocco attaches particular importance to the development of cooperative relations with many African countries and the materialization of this cooperation through tangible projects, she added.
