Morocco, ‘Strategic Ally’ of Spain in Energy Sector: Spanish FM

Madrid – Morocco is a “strategic ally” of Spain in several fields, including in the energy sector, Spanish Foreign Affairs minister, Alfonso Dastis, said here on Monday.

Spain has long given priority to energy interconnections both with the countries of the North and those of the South and, in this context, “Morocco is for us a strategic ally including in the energy sector,” Dastis pointed out at an economic forum organized by Spanish paper “Cinco Días”.

José Folgado, chairman of Red Eléctrica de España, a major Spanish company in the electricity market, underlined the importance of launching feasibility studies for the establishment of a third electrical interconnection between Spain and Morocco.

“We are moving in Europe towards a new energy model, in which a third submarine cable between Spain and Morocco is very important,” he noted at a press briefing last week.
