Morocco’s Contribution ‘Will Not Stop’ at End of its COP Presidency (Official)

Nadi (Fiji) – Morocco will undoubtedly continue to contribute to efforts aimed at combating climate change despite the end of its COP presidency, said, Monday in Nadi (north-west of the Fiji islands), COP22 president, Salaheddine Mezouar.

The Kingdom “will continue its contribution which will not stop at the end of its COP presidency”, Mezouar told MAP on the fringes of “Partnership Days”, held on Oct. 16-17 ahead of Pre-COP23, emphasizing the important role of partnerships and non-state actors in the fight against climate change.

During this Pre-COP, the Kingdom will make its recommendations and confirm its commitment stemming from the momentum, solidarity and mobilization it was able to create during its presidency, he said, adding that the Moroccan delegation will present what “we have learned in terms of substance in this year of our presidency”.

“It is also an important moment for Morocco to take stock of the progress achieved during this two-year presidency”, he added, affirming that under the leadership of HM King Mohammed VI, Morocco has made the climate issue a top priority that requires urgent and coordinated action.

Mezouar, who underlined the importance of “Partnership Days”, said that this session will tackle one of the issues raised by Morocco during its chairmanship, namely the importance of partnerships, particularly through the “Marrakech Partnership for Global Climate Action”.

This partnership, he went on, is an initiative aimed at speeding up climate action for the 2017-2020 period and gathers state and non-state stakeholders involved in climate action within the same platform, with the goal of sharing lessons, success and best practices.

Mezouar added that the session will be an opportunity to review initiatives and coalitions, and to strengthen the role and potential of non-state actors in climate change mitigation.

The “Partnership Days” examines the issues of climate financing and the means to strengthen the resilience of oceans and coastal areas to climate change, by adapting to country-specific targets and priorities.
