Strong 7.1-Magnitude Quake Rattles Northeastern Japan

Tokyo – A strong 7.1-magnitude earthquake hit off Japan’s Fukushima Prefecture on Saturday night, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

“Although there may be slight sea-level changes in coastal regions/ this earthquake has caused no damage to Japan,” the agency added.

The powerful tremor occurred at 11:08 p.m. local time, according to Kyodo News Agency.

The tremor was registered near the eastern coast of the Honshu island at the depth of 60 kilometres. It was also felt in the capital Tokyo, according to local reports.

The US Tsunami Warning center said there was no initial information that a tsunami was imminent.

Japan sits on the edge of four tectonic plates so earthquakes and volcanic eruptions are fairly commonplace.
