Regional Meeting Highlights Morocco’s Experience in Sustainable Development

Abu Dhabi- The Moroccan experience in climate and sustainable development was highlighted on Sunday in Abu Dhabi, during a GCC and MENA Regional Dialogue For Climate Action.

Secretary-General of the Environment Department at the Ministry of Energy, Mining and Sustainable Development, Mohamed Benyahia, who took part in this virtual meeting, said that Morocco has adopted, in recent years, a proactive and integrated approach that promoted the harmonization of climate policy in line with the objectives and challenges of the National Strategy for Sustainable Development and in accordance with the directives of HM King Mohammed VI.

The approach is focused on the implementation of the National Climate Plan, with the objective to establish strong climate governance and strengthen resilience to climate risks, to accelerate the transition to a low-carbon economy, to integrate the territorial field in the climate dynamics, and to strengthen stakeholders’ technological and financial capacities, Benyahia explained.

He focused on the update of the nationally determined contribution to the Paris Climate Agreement, explaining that the overall goal of this contribution is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 46% by 2030.

The contribution determined at the national level includes 65 projects, with the implementation involving 9 economic sectors, Benyahia said, noting that the implementation of 45 pc of projects requires the mobilization of additional financial resources under the international climate financing.

Sectors involved in the implementation of projects include industry, housing, transport, agriculture, waste management, land management, and forestry, he noted.
