Horn of Africa to Experience Fifth Consecutive Poor Rainy Season – IGAD

Nairobi – The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has indicated that the Horn of Africa region will experience a fifth consecutive poor rainy season between October and December this year.

The Horn of Africa will experience drier-than-normal weather conditions between October and December as the drought that has ravaged the region continues, the Climate Prediction and Applications Centre (ICPAC) under IGAD said.

In a statement, ICPAC explained that the drought-affected areas in Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia are expected to receive insufficient rainfall until the end of the year, noting that the poor conditions are likely to extend to parts of Eritrea, most of Uganda and Tanzania.

ICPAC also estimated that the onset of the rainy season is likely to be delayed in most of the eastern part of the region, including southern Ethiopia, central and southern Somalia, eastern Kenya, most of Burundi and Tanzania.

In this regard, IGAD Executive Secretary Workneh Gebeyehu called on governments, donors, humanitarian organizations and development actors to help the region cope with the crisis.
