Sustainable Oases Charter, Key Project for Oases Preservation (FAO Official)

Errachidia – The Sustainable Oases Charter is an important mechanism to promote preservation, restoration and enhancement of oasis areas, Representative of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in Morocco, Jean Senahoun, said Thursday in Errachidia.

This project is a reference framework to promote the sustainability, social inclusion and resilience of oases, Senahoun underlined at a two-day workshop, held at the initiative of the National Agency for the Development of Oasis Zones and Argan (ANDZOA) and FAO under the theme “Sustainable Oases”.

The Sustainable Oases Charter aims to generate, through in-depth studies, several data, knowledge and information on water management in ecosystems, the official said, adding that this project is important in terms of collaboration between ANDZOA and FAO.

Oasis areas are facing major challenges amplified by climate change, desertification and demographic pressure, he warned, stressing the need for mobilization, commitment and collaboration of all stakeholders to ensure the sustainability of oases.

This workshop is part of the first component relating to the dialogue of the OASIL Project which aims to promote Oasis Agroecosystems through an integrated, sustainable and landscaped approach in the Drâa-Tafilalet region.
