African Agriculture’s Adaptation to Climate Change: Key Theme on COP22 Agenda (Mezouar)

Marrakech, 30/09/2016 (MAP) – The Initiative for the adaptation of African agriculture to climate change (AAA), launched last April by Morocco, will be one of the key themes on the COP22 agenda, COP22 President Salaheddine Mezouar said Friday.

This “very ambitious” initiative is a call to action with considerable economic development stakes in Africa, South-South cooperation and global food security, Mezouar said at the Ministerial Plenary session of the high-level meeting on the Adaptation of African Agriculture to Climate Change Initiative (AAA), which took place on September 29-30 in Marrakech.

In this regard, he said that this initiative is meant to mobilize financial resources and public and private investment necessary for its implementation and the reinforcement of the technical capacity of farmers.

Mezouar also noted that the continental initiative of Morocco comes within the framework of the African Initiative on Adaptation (AIA) announced by the Egyptian president at COP21 and supported by the African Group at COP22, pointing out that AAA and AIA actions are complementary and aim to strengthen adaptation efforts in Africa.
