UN: Morocco Reaffirms Strong Commitment to Sustainable Development

United Nations – Secretary of State for Sustainable Development, Nezha El Ouafi, highlighted, on Wednesday at UN headquarters in New York, Morocco’s strong commitment to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in line with the United Nations agenda 2030.

Speaking on behalf of Morocco at the High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development, El Ouafi said that since the adoption of this agenda in 2015, the kingdom has engaged in a process of collective mobilization, at the national and international levels, by making agenda 2030 a roadmap and an efficient mechanism for strengthening the sustainable development process expected by the entire international community.

In order to achieve this objective, she went on to say, Morocco has submitted a Voluntary National Review on the sustainable development agenda and has worked to put in place plans and programs for its implementation.

As part of this dynamic, Morocco has also sought to establish an integrated development model that combines economic development, social prosperity and environmental protection, while working to strengthen governance, she added.

El Ouafi noted that Morocco’s commitment to speeding up the SDGs had been strengthened by the adoption of the National Strategy for Sustainable Development 2030 by the Council of ministers, under the effective chairmanship of HM King Mohammed VI, on 25 June 2017.

This strategy, developed in consultation with all national stakeholders, is based on clear constitutional and legal standards, El Ouafi said, stressing that it is an effective mechanism for achieving sustainable development by 2030.

The High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development, held at United Nations Headquarters on July 9-18 under the theme “Empowering people and ensuring inclusiveness and equality”, aims to present the achievements and challenges in the implementation of the SDGs within the set deadlines.
