UCLG-Africa to Hold Extraordinary General Meeting on Nov. 13 in Marrakech

Rabat, 02/11/2016 (MAP) – United Cities and Local Governments of Africa (UCLG Africa) will hold, on 13 November in Marrakech, an Extraordinary General meeting to revise its statutes.

The choice to hold this meeting during the 22nd Conference of the Parties to the Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP22) was made at the 14th session of the Executive Committee of the Organization, which took place on May 10, 2016 in Rabat, UCLG Africa said in a statement.

In this context, the Executive Committee urged UCLG Africa members to ensure a high level participation of African local authorities at the climate summit, but also at the Summit of local and regional representatives for the climate, which will take place on November 14 during COP22, the statement noted.

The UCLGA is the umbrella organization and the united voice and representative of local government in Africa. It results from the unification of the three pre-existing continental groupings of local governments, namely the African Union of Local Authorities (AULA), the Union des Villes Africaines (UVA) and the Africa Chapter of the Unao dos Ciudades y Capitaes Lusofono Africana, (UCCLA).

It is an institution that gathers 40 national associations of local governments from all regions of Africa as well as the 2000 cities that have more than 100.000 inhabitants. Therefore UCLGA represents nearly 350 million Africans citizens.
