CEO of Masen Meets with UN Special Envoy for Climate Action Summit

United Nations (New York) – CEO of Moroccan Agency for Sustainable Energy (Masen) Mustapha Bakkoury met, on Wednesday in New York, with Alfonso de Alba, UNSG Special Envoy for the Climate Action Summit, slated next September.

This meeting was an opportunity to review actions by Morocco in the field of renewable energy and sustainable development, Bakkoury told MAP.

This vision is well-identified at the international level and this is what global decision-makers are now interested in. The Kingdom has already moved from vision to implementation of renewable energy projects, he noted.

Morocco is expected to participate in some initiatives and to make some proposals at the Summit on Climate Action, to be held on Sept. 23 in New York at the initiative of the UN Secretary-General, Bakkoury said.

The meeting with de Alba was an opportunity to discuss some initiatives that we proposed to African countries, like the initiative of a possible coalition with these countries on the issue of access to energy, in particular the development of small-sized electricity networks, given that electricity remains a real challenge at the continental level, he explained.

This initiative is in line with Morocco’s commitment to contribute to the development of African economies in terms of energy, water and agriculture, he said.

Bakkoury also had a meeting with the Danish ambassador to the UN, in his capacity as co-lead of the energy coalition for the Climate Action Summit.

Masen’s CEO also held talks with Ethiopia’s energy minister and took part in a conference organized by the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) on accelerating investments in clean energy in Africa to support climate action.
