Forest Fires: ‘Medium’ to ‘Extreme’ Risk on July 29-31 in Several Moroccan Provinces (ANEF)

Rabat – The National Water and Forest Agency (ANEF) forecasts a “medium” to “extreme” risk of forest fires in several of the Kingdom’s provinces during the period from July 29 to 31.
After analyzing data relating in particular to forest types and their combustibility and flammability levels, as well as topo-climatic parameters, ANEF identified an extreme risk (red level) in the provinces of Chefchaouen, Taza, Taroudant, Oujda-Angad, Azilal, Beni Mellal, Ifrane, Khenifra, Sefrou and Guercif, the Agency said in a statement.
ANEF pointed out that the risk is particularly high (orange level) in the provinces of Tangier-Assilah, Al Hoceima, Ouezzane, Driouch, Taounate and Essaouira.
In addition, it noted a medium risk (yellow level) in the provinces of Fahs-Anjra, Larache, Tetouan, M’Diq-Fnideq, Rabat, Salé, Skhirate-Temara, Kenitra, Berkane and Nador.
The Agency urges forest dwellers and visitors, as well as people working in forest areas, to be vigilant and take the necessary precautions to avoid forest fires. It also calls on them to quickly alert local authorities in the event of smoke sightings or suspicious behavior.
In order to anticipate the problem of forest fires in Morocco, ANEF produces, on a daily basis and through its scientific prediction models, maps that precisely identify areas at risk across the country.
