Morocco, Key Partner in Fighting Climate Change (EU Commissioner)

Brussels, 19/10/2016 (MAP) – Morocco is a key partner and an active player in the fight against climate change, said EU Commissioner for Climate Action and Energy, Miguel Arias Cañete, in an interview with MAP.

The European Commissioner, who is taking part at the Pre-COP ministerial meeting, held in Marrakech on October 18-19, said that Morocco and the European Union have excellent cooperation in matters relating to climate change and COP22 preparations.

The EU provides financial support to Morocco for the practical organization of the COP22, he said.

The EU, he added, provides a budget of 5 million Euros to support the COP22, and the Directorate-General for Climate Action has decided to allocate 2 million Euros as part of “Global Public Goods and Challenges” program.

Arias Cañete said that the EU delegation in Morocco will provide about 1 million Euro to the civil society pole of COP22 Steering Committee to support a number of activities before and during the Conference.

He also said that the European Union will be strongly represented at this global conference, slated for November 7-18 in Marrakech.
