Death Toll From Eta Hurricane in Guatemala Exceeds 150 People
Guatemala City– The number of people killed or gone missing due to Hurricane Eta has reached 150 in Guatemala, Guatemalan President Alejandro Giammattei said.
“Among the deceased and disappeared, the unofficial figures show us 150 dead. They are unofficial because we do not have them fully confirmed,” said the president. Giammattei,” he said Friday at a press conference.
The Queja village in Alta Verapaz Department was the hardest-hit by the hurricane as the Guatemalan Army reported that around 150 houses had been buried by landslides.
More than 75,000 people had been directly affected by the landslides and floods, he added.
Eta first hit Nicaragua Tuesday as a Category Four hurricane with winds of 225km/h and torrential rains. It then weakened into a tropical depression as it moved into neighboring Honduras and later Guatemala.
