UAE to Build 5 Solar Power Plants in Iraq
Baghdad – Iraq has signed an agreement with the United Arab Emirates for the construction of five solar power plants in the country in a bid to jumpstart transition to renewable energy, the Iraqi Oil Ministry said.
When completed, the plants will generate up to 2,000 MW in total, with the plant expected to operate at half capacity at the first stage.
The five stations will meet 20% of Iraq’s renewable energy needs, according to the ministry.
“Iraq is working to ensure the production of 7,500 MW of renewable energy,” Oil Minister Ihsan Abdul Jabbar Ismail said.
This agreement marks the start of Iraq’s large-scale project to turn to renewable energy, with others to follow, the ministry added.
